Fly in Fly out Numbers on the Increase
According to the West Australian newspaper, the last 12 months has seen a new peak in fly in fly
out (FIFO) workers with 700,000 recorded flights through the Perth Domestic Airport. 27% of passengers were mine workers and approximately 2.2 million passenger movements were directly related to the resources sector.
In a related article from the Property Observer, the State Government has committed $130 million to the Karratha City of the North project to help address the sustainability of communities and increased pressure caused by FIFO workers in the Pilbara region.
The $1.5 billion project will develop more accommodation and infrastructure to encourage more workers to live locally in the Pilbara region. The project will also develop Karratha’s infrastructure to support a population of 50,000 persons by 2020.
