WA Road Toll decrease in 2011

The RAC reported that WA had its lowest road fatality rate since the early 1970’s but was still above the national toll per 100,000 people.

The preliminary road toll indicated 179 lives were lost on WA roads in 2011; equating to 7.35 per 100,000. This is an improvement to 2005 where the figure reached 8.06 per 100,000.

Matt Brown, RAC Head of Advocacy, said "in a national context, the numbers still are not as good as our rate of 7.63 (which) lags significantly behind the national rate of around 5.53".

According to the Western Australia Office of Road Safety, an average of nine work-related vehicle fatalities occurred from 2001/02 to 2005/06.The impact of road trauma on the victims’ families is enormous and is a reminder of the dangers of unsafe driving.
