Safety and Health Representatives
(Introductory)
Overview
Safety and Health Representatives (SHRs) play an important role in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment. The primary function of a SHR is to assist management and employees to work together to improve workplace health and safety.
This five-day introductory course is accredited by WorkSafe WA and is linked to a nationally recognised qualification.
Participants will learn how to carry out the important functions and responsibilities necessary to be an effective SHR in the workplace.
Intended for
Elected Safety and Health Representatives (SHR’s).
Learning Outcomes
- Apply knowledge of legislation in the role of a Safety and Health Representative or employee
- Conduct workplace inspections and investigations
- Communicate information on safety and health matters
- Effectively represent employees on safety and health issues
- Resolve conflict and issue Provisional
- Improvement Notices (PINs)
- Identify hazards and apply risk management processes
Learning Pathway - Specialist OHS Units of Competency
Successful course participants have the opportunity to receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following six specialist OHS Units of Competency.
- BSBOHS301B Apply knowledge of OHS legislation in the workplace
- BSBOHS302B Participate effectively in OHS communication and consultative processes
- BSBOHS303B Contribute to OHS hazard identification and risk assessment
- BSBOHS304B Contribute to OHS hazard control
- BSBOHS305B Contribute to OHS issue resolution
- BSBOHS307B Participate in OHS investigations
This pathway is achieved by:
- Successfully completing and submitting all in-class workbook assignments
- Submitting a pathway enrolment application
- Submitting a third-party report from your employer that provides evidence of your workplace competencies in relation to the pathway
Activities are required to be performed within six weeks of course conclusion.
Learning Pathway - Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety
Successful course participants may also choose to attain a nationally recognised Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety qualification. This pathway is achieved by:
- Attainment of the six specialist OHS Units of Competency as described above
- Successfully completing and submitting workplace assignments and a workplace project
Certification
A Certificate of Participation will be issued at the end of the course.
Prerequisites
Participants are required to have sufficient numeracy and literacy skills to read and comprehend instruction for:
- Referencing and understanding legislation, standards and codes of practice
- Consulting with workers and employers on safety issues.

- Must bring identification
- Dress code is neat casual (no singlets or thongs), enclosed footwear
- Light lunch, morning and afternoon tea included
Cancellation Policy
To cancel a booking for a course that runs for two or more days, 8 working days are required to enable a full refund, if between 4 and 7 working days a 50% fee will be incurred. Any cancellation less than 3 working days will incur full costs.
