USI Information

You’ll need a Unique Student Identifier (USI) if you are completing Nationally Recognised training with us.

What is the Unique Student Identifier?

The Unique Student Identifier (USI) was implemented across the Training Industry on 1st of January 2015 to allow students to obtain their training records from one online source. This system provides accessibility for you to see all your training achievements from any Registered Training Organisation in one place.

A USI is effectively a reference number allocated to each student. When students attend training they will need to provide it to their Training Organisation which will allow for their records to be updated in one location. This will also assist Training Organisations in checking pre-requisites as well as completing Credit Transfers and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

If you complete a course with AVELING that is Nationally Recognised, we currently provide you with a Statement of Attainment or Qualification and if you lose your certificate we can reissue it upon request.

The records or results that you can access from your account could also be referred to as:

  • Transcripts
  • Vocational education achievements
  • Qualifications
  • Enrolments
  • Statements of Attainment

Each USI account will be updated at least once each year to include any training that has been completed. The only records that you will not find on the online system are courses that do not lead to a Nationally Recognised Certificate.

Key Points about the USI System:
  • A USI is effectively a reference number allocated to each student. When students attend training they will need to provide it to their Training Organisation which will allow for their records to be updated in one location.
  • It will only show records from Nationally Recognised Training completed on or after the 1 January 2015, it will not be retrospective.
  • Records will be available on the system from 1 January 2016.
  • It will only contain Nationally Recognised Training; it will not include short courses or programs that are not issued by a Registered Training Organisation.

Frequently asked questions about the USI

A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a reference number made up of 10 digits which could be numbers and letters that give you access to your own training records. You will have one USI number for your lifetime. You can create and manage your USI details at www.usi.gov.au

Part 5 of the Student Identifiers Act 2014 states that Registered Training Organisations must not issue certificates if a USI number is not provided by the student.

The USI scheme has been developed to assist all students attending Nationally Recognised Training to have the ability to access their training achievements in one location. This will save you from having to carry a portfolio of certificates around with you in the future. Since 1 January 2016 any Qualifications or Units of Competency you achieve will be available when you login. You will be able to access transcripts and provide them to prospective employers or to training organisations to recognise the achievements you hold.

The USI number you receive is unique to you. The only time you should need to provide it, is when you attend training at any Training Organisation so they can record your achievements against your USI to appear on your transcripts.

You can apply in minutes online at www.usi.gov.au ; alternatively you can contact your Training Organisation who can apply on your behalf if you provide them with permission.

Step One
Have at least one and preferably two forms of ID. For example, Drivers Licence, Medicare Card, Australian passport, citizenship card, visa

Step Two
Have your personal contact details ready

Step Three
Visit the USI website at www.usi.gov.au

Step Four
Select the ‘Create a USI’ link and follow the steps

Step Five
Agree to the Terms and Conditions

Step Six
Follow the instructions to create a USI – it should only take a few minutes.

You will need to provide the following details when completing a USI application:

  • Your Name
  • Your Gender
  • Your Date of Birth
  • Where you were born
  • Country in which you are studying
  • Contact details – this could be phone, email or mailing address
  • One (1) form of ID

You need to make sure that the personal details you provide match the details on your form of ID.

When you first obtained your USI number you should have received some form of communication, such as an email that contained your USI number. If you cannot find the communication with your USI, the easiest way to obtain your USI number is to access the website www.usi.gov.au and go to the Student Login area. You will then need to select that you have forgotten your USI. You will need to enter a few details and answer the security questions that you set to verify who you are to display your USI. The details must be the same as those you entered when you applied for a USI or, if you did so, when you last updated your USI account.

To assist in identifying your USI number from anywhere the form can be completed on your tablet device or smartphone.

Yes, if you are enrolling in or completing a course that is Nationally Recognised you must provide the Training Organisation your USI number to receive a certificate. If you do not have a USI number the Training Organisation can assist you in obtaining one.

Since 1 January 2016 your records from 2015 should be available for you to view. At this stage your records will be updated on an annual basis for any future training.

By accessing the website www.usi.gov.au, if you have a form of ID and provide personal details that match your ID it will take you no time at all to receive your USI number on the screen. If you provide your email address as your contact details, you will receive an email confirming your USI number for future reference.

Training is an integral part of any business. You may have individuals already completing, booked to attend or may be interested in specific Nationally Recognised Qualifications or Units of Competency with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), like AVELING.

Since 1st of January 2015, every staff member you have involved in training or identified to complete training will need to have a Unique Student Identifier to enable the RTO to issue their certificates in a timely manner when they complete the course.

You can be proactive and assist in encouraging your staff to get their USI number now by completing the simple process online at www.usi.gov.au
