Health and Safety Representatives Refresher

This one-day course takes place in the classroom, where learners will work with other safety representatives and participants to share ideas, experiences and personal reflection about their safety culture and practices.

The course covers the following topics:

• Interpreting the work health and safety legislative framework and its relationship to the Health and Safety Representative (HSR)
• Identifying key parties, legislative obligation, and duties
• Establishing representation in the workplace
• Participating in consultation and issue resolution
• Representing members in the WHS risk management process undertaken by the PCBU
• Issuing a Provisional Improvement Notice (PIN) and directing the cessation of work
• Incident reporting and investigation
• Reviewing key changes, developments and updates to WHS legislation and codes
• Reviewing the HSR role and responsibilities
• Areas and opportunities for further HSR competency development.

There are no formal assessments or written tests as part of this refresher course, however participants will be expected to take part in activities and demonstrate key skills and knowledge.

This course aims to refresh your skills and knowledge, with the focus on maintaining and developing your personal competency, and the improvement of workplace health and safety (WHS) practice and culture in your workplace.

Upon successful completion you will be able to:

• Interpret and apply the WHS legal framework in the workplace as an HSR.
• Describe how to consult, represent members and participate in risk management and issue resolution.
• Describe how to issue a PIN and direct cessation of work.
• Explain how to use the incident reporting and investigation process to improve safety.
• Update knowledge of latest developments and updates in the health and safety field.
• Reflect on personal practice as an HSR and identify opportunities for maintaining and improving competence.

Participants must have previously completed the five-day Health and Safety Representatives course. All HSRs are entitled to attend up to one day’s refresher training each year.

Participants are also required to have sufficient numeracy and literacy skills to read and comprehend instructions for:

• Referencing and understanding legislation, standards and codes of practice.
• Consulting with workers and employers on safety issues.
