Understand your WHS responsibilities and gain the required Units of Competency for Statutory Supervisors in WA mine sites.
The Statutory Supervisor course provides the essential WHS and risk management knowledge, skills and national Units of Competency required for Statutory Supervisors in the Western Australian mining industry.
As a Statutory Supervisor you will oversee elevated levels of risk within your work area. This course ensures you receive a comprehensive and well-rounded knowledge base, directly relevant to the role and responsibilities of supervisors in the mining sector.
This course covers two Units of Competency, which meet the WorkSafe requirements under Schedule 26 of the WHS (Mines) Regulations (WA) 2022:
BSBWHS411 – Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs
BSBWHS414 – Contribute to WHS risk management.
As well as completing the two Units of Competency, there is also an examination component that Statutory Supervisors are required to pass. This is managed by the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) – more information on this is outlined on the DEMIRS website.
This is a classroom course with workplace assessments, designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need as a Statutory Supervisor.
You will learn how to implement strategies to manage your responsibilities through consultation and collaboration and providing education and advice to your work team.

This course includes workplace assessments, designed to solidify your classroom learning.
Assessments include knowledge questions, workplace assessments relevant to each session and workplace observation reports (to be completed by your supervisor or manager). Assessments are to be completed after each classroom session.

Successful completion of this course provides you with the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

BSBWHS414 – Contribute to WHS risk management
These units can also be used towards the BSB40520 Certificate IV in Leadership and Management or the BSB41419 Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, should you wish to continue your learning journey.
There are no specific pre-requisites for this course, however we ask that you consider the below.
In order to complete the required workplace assessments for this course, you will need access to a workplace with existing WHS policies and procedures.
It is expected that learners applying to this course meet the following requirements:
Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Survey
If this is your first Aveling course, you will be required to complete a Language Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) survey to provide us with an understanding of your level of literacy and numeracy.
Based on the outcome of the survey, we may contact you to discuss options that will best suit your individual learning needs. If literacy support is required, additional costs may be incurred.

Our Learner Support Service can provide extra support as needed to help you in understanding the course material or assessments.
Three (3) two-hour online support sessions are included free with each Nationally Recognised course you are enrolled in. Additional support can be arranged, if needed, at a cost of $120 per hour.
With the introduction of the Work Health Safety Act (2020) and the Work Health Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022, all Mining Operations are required to have a working Mine Safety Management System (MSMS), and within that system clearly defined duty holders within statutory positions; the Statutory Supervisor is one of those positions.
Under the WHS (Mines) regulations (Schedule 26. cl 3(1)), the following areas at a mine must be supervised by a Statutory Supervisor:
