TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment FAQs

We’ve pulled together the key information and common questions.

You may have heard that the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment has been superseded, but what does that mean and what are the implications for your current qualification or course?

This page aims to cover the key information and common questions asked about this transition.

Firstly, what’s the story?

  • As occurs regularly with Nationally Recognised Training Packages, the Training and Education Training Package was reviewed by an industry skills committee, and updated to make sure it reflects the current needs of the industry.
  • In November 2022, the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment was endorsed by the Australian Industry Skills Committee (AISC).
  • This replaces the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment which has been the current iteration of the qualification since 2016.
  • The TAE40116 will be transitioned to the TAE40122 over the next two years until TAE40122 is the only version available from RTOs.

Here are answers to some of the frequently asked questions about the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment:

The main difference between the TAE40116 and TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is the number of units of competency included in the qualification.

The TAE40116 consists of 10 units of competency (9 core and 1 elective), whereas the new TAE40122 consists of 12 (6 core and 6 elective). This means there will be more learning and potentially more assessment requirements in the new qualification.

The content and combination of units of competency reflect the changes in the industry, and knowledge and skills considered to now be required for trainers and assessors in the Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) space. The larger proportion of elective units reflects the variety of specialisms and amount of change in the industry, and means there are more options for learners and RTOs to create specific learning outcomes.

The TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment remains a valid requirement for VET Trainers and Assessors working at RTOs, along with its successor, the TAE40122 version.

The TAE40116 is equivalent to the TAE40122. This means that those currently holding a TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification (or those completing TAE40116 within the transition period) will not be required to upgrade to the TAE40122.

This is a different scenario than the last transition from the TAE40110 to the TAE40116, where learners were required to complete extra learning and assessments to upgrade their qualification or complete the full TAE40116.

The transition this time around is much more straight forward for learners and RTOs, and for the time being, the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment remains the minimum requirement, along with its successor (the TAE40122 version). This means either the TAE40116 or the TAE40122 are valid trainer and assessor qualifications.

Although the TAE40116 is deemed equivalent to the TAE40122, there are significant changes in how the new qualification is set up. There are more Units of Competency to cover, changes to assessments and potentially more training days.

The transition to a new qualification is also planned so as to cause minimal disruption to learners as they complete their studies, and for these reasons, we don’t build in an automatic transfer from one version of a qualification to another.

If you are unable to complete the TAE40116 in time, a switch to the new TAE40122 may be arranged on a case-by-case basis. However, it will require additional learning and assessments to be completed.

If you would like to discuss your plans, please contact our team on +61 8 9379 9999.

You should note however that the TAE40116 is equivalent, and so there is no reason to need to switch to the new course as you will be equally as qualified with the TAE40116 version of the qualification.

The time between when a newer version of a qualification is announced and the time when the old version is decommissioned is known as the ‘transition period’. This usually lasts 12 months, but sometimes 18 or 24 months. During this time, both versions of the qualification may be offered by different RTOs as they prepare for the new qualification, providing time to:

  • add the new training product to their scope;
  • develop the new course ready for launch and plan for decommissioning of the superseded version;
  • complete training and assessment of students enrolled in the superseded course;
  • transfer ongoing students to the new training product as applicable/necessary;
  • withdraw students who are not ongoing or who do not wish to continue with the superseded qualification.

The process of reviewing Nationally Recognised Training products ensures qualifications and units of competency are fit-for-purpose, up to date with industry needs and providing the skills and knowledge that learners require. This means that all training packages are regularly reviewed, and if required, superseded and updated.

No, you will not have to upgrade to the new TAE40122.

In fact, the challenges that arose from the last TAE transition process were taken into account when planning this new product, as you can see from the initial Case for Change document prepared by the PWC Skills for Australia SSO:

“It is the intention of the IRC to work with the TAE Strategic Advisory Committee, the Department and VET sector regulators to ensure that currently qualified trainers and assessors are not subject to onerous re-skilling requirements, while ensuring the integrity of training and assessment practices.”

The transition this time around is much more straight forward for learners and RTOs, and for the time being, the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment will remain the minimum requirement, along with its successor (the TAE40122 version). This means either the TAE40116 or the TAE40122 are valid trainer and assessor qualifications.

The current TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or its successor) will remain the requirement in the Standards for RTOs 2015 for VET Trainers and Assessors working at RTOs.

Transitions occur approximately every 6 or 7 years, so you should expect to need to update your qualification at some point to keep your skills and knowledge current, and to continue to be eligible to train and assess Nationally Recognised VET training.

RTOs are run in accordance with RTO Standards governed by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), currently RTO Standards 2015.

ASQA will release new Standards for RTOs this year for implementation on 1 January 2025. However, early changes to the Standards were made on 1 March 2024 to address the current challenges within the VET sector in recruiting qualified trainers and assessors across all industry areas.

These early changes mean that RTOs can now employ industry experts to work as trainers and contribute to assessment (under supervision), and enable people who hold an education degree to work as trainers and assessors in the VET industry. There are strict rules and requirements for these appointments, however – find out more.
