Indigenous Literacy Day 2024

Today we were excited to celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day by hosting our own Great Book Swap event to raise fund for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF).

We had a wonderful selection of books, and it was a lovely opportunity to find a book or two and have a chat about our favourite reads!

Thank you to all who have donated to this great cause! The remaining selection of books will be in the Whistling Eagle Café until the end of the week.

Donations help provide books, books in First Languages, and learning resources to children and families living in remote Communities across Australia.

NAIDOC Week 2024

7-13 July marks NAIDOC Week in Australia; a time to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s theme is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’.

“The fire represents the enduring strength and vitality of Indigenous cultures, passed down through generations despite the challenges faced. It is a symbol of connection to the land, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As we honour this flame, we kindle the sparks of pride and unity, igniting a renewed commitment to acknowledging, preserving, and sharing the cultural heritage that enriches our nation.

“Blak, Loud and Proud” encapsulates the unapologetic celebration of Indigenous identity, empowering us to stand tall in our heritage and assert our place in the modern world…”

Find out more about NAIDOC Week and this year’s theme on the official website.

To reflect this year’s NAIDOC theme, Aveling will ‘keep the fire burning’ by sharing and exploring the stories and voices of those from the past and the present who have helped shape the communities we know today.

We will also have a special NAIDOC week menu in our Whistling Eagle Café with traditional flavours and ingredients. The menu will also raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). The ILF are a community-led organisation, providing culturally relevant books, resources, and programs to support remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities to create and publish their stories in languages of their choice. Find out more, or donate directly to ILF on their website.

International Women’s Day

8 March is International Women’s Day (IWD)! ♀

IWD aims to build awareness and support for women’s rights and full participation in the economy, politics, community and everyday life.

This year’s theme is ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress.’ The world is facing many crises, ranging from geopolitical conflicts to soaring poverty levels and the escalating impacts of climate change. By investing in women, we are investing in more people, more diverse opinions and more opportunities in the global workforce to help spark change and speed the transition towards a healthier, safer, and more equal world for all.

This year, some our staff had the opportunity to attend the Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA IWD event at Crown today, and learn from inspiring women leaders across industries.

Aveling is also marking IWD this year by identifying ways to reduce barriers for women and girls accessing education and employment:

Our staff are donating professional clothing to Dress for Success which aims to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

We are also donating to Share the Dignity which distributes period products to those in need and work to achieve menstrual equity here in Australia. Period poverty, defined as a lack of access to menstrual products, hygiene facilities, waste management, and education, affects many women globally.

One of the impacts of period poverty is lower attendance rates at schools and work due to stigma and the costs of period products.

Safe Work Month at Aveling

Today marks the end of Safe Work Month, and time to put into practice all the things you’ve learned to ensure we all embrace the theme: ‘For everyone’s safety, work safely.

At Aveling, we’ve had a busy month highlighting the importance of working safely within our own organisation. Each week, we had a themed challenge for staff to take part in, and we concluded the month with a celebratory morning tea to congratulate everyone on taking part.

Congratulations to our winners and to all those who participated:

  • Respect at Work: awarded to the first person to complete our respect at work online learning: congratulations to Sheina!
  • Social Bingo: Beate and Megha, tied for first place by initiating cross-team conversations with coworkers to find out who provided fun facts about themselves.
  • Hazard Spotting Challenge: it was a very close competition, but Jon identified all workplace hazards first in a ‘spot the difference’ image challenge.
  • Master Movement: we joined in together on a physical health challenge over the final two weeks and collaboratively walked an impressive 1.5 million steps! The win went to Sheina, who recorded an outstanding 478000 steps, and runners up were Sarah and Shelley (prize collected by Kathy).

These challenges and awards are a great way to not only have fun and bring staff together, but to highlight the importance of mental health, workplace risks and hazard awareness, physical health and exercise, and ensuring work health and safety is a priority for everyone’s safety.
