AVELING Café helps Cockburn create energy from food waste

food recycling boxAVELING Café has been taking part in the City of Cockburn’s commercial food waste trial aiming to determine sustainability and environmental benefits for a potential future environmental service.

Our contribution has helped to divert over 15 tonnes of food waste from landfill. This means more than 28,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions have been captured to generate electricity, rather than being released into the atmosphere and harming the environment.

The trial is a partnership between the City of Cockburn and Richgro, and has been made possible with an $18,257 State Government Community and Industry Engagement grant. The food waste is being delivered for processing in Richgro’s anaerobic digestion plant in Jandakot to help produce high-quality biofertiliser and electricity (via methane capture) to go back into the electricity grid.

Jayson Aveling, Director of Operations at AVELING, says ‘We are always looking for ways to reduce waste and help the environment, so we were very happy to take part in this exciting new project by Cockburn City Council. We are proud to have contributed to reducing a significant amount of waste going to landfill and look forward to continuing to participate in the pilot trial.

The trial was originally planned to end in November, however it will now continue until early 2021.

The City of Cockburn are looking for more participants to take part in the trial. Find out more and apply on the Cockburn City website.

Supporting ‘Pack the Chopper’ for Food Bank

Aveling team in front of Police Helicopter

After taking part in last year’s inaugural ‘Pack the Chopper’, AVELING are proud to again help WA Police Air Wing, alongside other local businesses, in donating a chopper-load of food for Food Bank.

Our team collected a total of 7 boxes full of food, which were dropped off to Police Air Wing in Jandakot this morning ready to be distributed to Western Australians in need.

The holidays can be a difficult time for many, and even more so in 2020 after such a challenging year. If you would like to help Food Bank, please visit their website for information.

Special thanks to Siobhan Jones from Police Air Wing who gave some of our staff and their families a fabulous personal tour of their facilities!

New contact register requirements at AVELING Café

From Saturday 5 December, AVELING Café will be required to maintain a mandatory contact register for staff and customers in order to assist with WA Department of Health contact tracing, should it be required.

AVELING already records participants, staff and guests for course registration and fire safety purposes, however we will now specifically collect the date, name, telephone number and arrival time of all Café patrons as required by the WA Government.

To assist us, the WA Government has developed the free, SafeWA app, an online contact register system that uses QR Codes to register attendance. This will be the preferred method of registration at AVELING Café, however we will also provide a paper form at the Café – if you don’t register via the App you must fill out your details in writing.

SafeWA app logo

SafeWA can be downloaded from:

Download from the Apple app store    Download from the Google Play Store

More information about the app and a how-to video can be found on the WA Government website.

Please note, this is not optional. Failing to comply with the new requirements to maintain a contact register could result in fines and penalties of up to $50,000 for an individual and $250,000 for a body corporate or 12 months’ imprisonment.

To make the introduction of this measure as smooth as possible, we encourage you to download the App and familiarise yourself with the process prior to Saturday.

The contact register records must be kept for 28 days, and will not be used for any other purpose.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us on +61 8 9379 9999.

AVELING to give unemployed workers FREE access to skill-boosting online courses

Australia’s unemployment rate peaked in July, a consequence of COVID-19 and the huge economic impacts across Australia and the globe.

The most recent statistics put Australia’s unemployment rate at 7.0% and underemployment rate at 10.4%. There are many thousands of people looking for work and they are competing with thousands more.

As Australia climbs out of the chaos that is 2020, AVELING would like to lend a hand to those in need, helping them be a little more competitive in their search for a job.

From December 1 to January 10, those seeking employment will be able to access a set of free courses designed to provide essential skills to prepare workers to re-enter the workplace and hit the ground running.

Register now
CEO Tony Aveling says: “AVELING understands this year has been tough on everyone, and as a training organisation, we have seen firsthand how learning new skills and boosting a resume can lead to new opportunities. That’s why we have come up with this initiative to help workers up-skill and re-enter the workforce.

It has always been our philosophy to help out those in need, and offering free courses to unemployed workers is just our way of giving back to our community; it is our gift over the holidays to help bring a little cheer and help people get back to work in 2021.

The skill-booster courses cover six key areas of knowledge needed in most workplaces:

Participants can undertake these courses, receive a certificate of participation to add to their resume and show employers that their knowledge is up to date and they are committed to actively building their skills to succeed.

As a family-owned WA-based company, AVELING endeavours to do what it can to help out the Perth community and beyond. Earlier this year, they also provided free courses to help over 50s get back into the workforce which was a resounding success, and continues to offer a Mental Health Awareness online course free of charge to ensure everyone has access to the important tools and information much needed in times like these.

Register online here and begin your course today.

WA is open!

Western Australia’s hard border was relaxed on Saturday 14 November to a controlled interstate border. This means that travellers are able to move across our state border more freely, with varying levels of COVID restrictions depending on which state they are travelling from and to.

More information and continuous updates on the controlled interstate border can be found on the WA Government website.

This is an exciting step in the fight against COVID-19, but the situation is still fluid, and the increased level of movements could pose a higher risk for those in WA which has been free of community transmission for some time.

At AVELING, we continue to practice the recommended restrictions and hygiene requirements as outlined by the WA government, and continue to closely monitor the situation.

Key measures in place at our Jandakot training facility are as follows:

  • Temperature checks are being conducted on arrival;
  • If you are displaying any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 you are asked to stay home. If presenting at our facilities with signs of illness you will be asked to go home until you feel well;
  • You are asked to ensure you practice good hygiene, washing hands regularly with soap and hand sanitiser;
  • Sanitiser stations and signage are located throughout the building;
    Meeting room tables are being sanitised after use;
  • We are operating with limited room capacities and ask participants to adhere to the ‘2 square metre rule’ in shared spaces;
  • The building is subject to nightly hospital grade cleaning;
  • Our cafeteria is open for normal service, with social distancing and increased hygiene practices and protocols being enforced;
  • All non-essential group activities remain cancelled.

We are pleased to be heading more towards a ‘new normal’ but ask that all participants and staff remain vigilant and follow our requirements to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Course update: ‘Provide First Aid’ and ‘Perform Rescue from a live LV Panel and CPR’

This week’s announcement by Premier Mark McGowan outlined that stage 5 COVID-19 restrictions in Western Australia will not come into effect until at least 24 October.

Due to the hygiene restrictions within stage 4 and wanting to ensure the safety of all participants, AVELING has decided to postpone ‘Provide First Aid’ and ‘UETSS00047 Perform Rescue from a Live LV Panel and CPR’ courses until at least November (or until restrictions are eased).

We will continue to monitor the ongoing situation to ensure the safety of our community and will review the appropriateness of running these courses should government advice change. You can read more about our ongoing control measures here.

Keep up to date on the COVID-19 situation in WA on the WA State government website, and sign up to our newsletter to receive regular updates about our courses, initiatives and more.
